Room air purifiers only work when the filter seals the housing.   1. Read the old filter.   4. Read what “HEPA” means on the listing. Prefer listings that state a concrete grade (for example H13) and what layers are included (pre-filter, particle media, carbon). “HEPA-type” or vague efficiency claims are a red flag when you care about seal and media.
  5. Decide OEM vs compatible after fit is clear. OEM from the maker or an authorized store is the safest fit baseline. Reputable third-party packs can cost less — only buy ones that explicitly list your exact purifier model or filter code, and prefer a clear return window.
  6. Plan the change interval. Many portable purifier filters are designed for about 6–12 months depending on model, pets, smoke, and runtime. Follow the maker’s interval, then shorten it if odors return early or airflow drops hard.
  7. Reset the filter timer. Many app-connected units need a manual or in-app reset after a change so the life indicator is useful again.
