Dehumidifier filters: buy the exact size and part number, not the label

Whole-home and crawlspace dehumidifiers need a filter that seals the intake. Shoppers often order by a rounded “9×11×1” label, then discover the OEM cartridge is actually a tick under 9 inches or 1.75 inches thick instead of a true 2-inch trade size. A loose or oversized pack leaks air, cuts capacity, and on some brands can void warranty language that requires the recommended filter. How to choose (actual size + part number first)

  1. Pull the old filter and measure it. Use a tape on the frame, not the marketing size on the box. Note height, width, and depth to the nearest 1/8 inch.
  2. Copy the OEM part number. Santa Fe examples include 4037724 (Compact70 / Ultra70 family, about 11.38 × 9.00 × 0.75 in) and 4037722-01 (Ultra98 / Ultra120 family, about 17.50 × 14.00 × 1.75 in). Honeywell/Resideo DR90 / DR120 often use 50070171-002 at about 14 × 17.5 × 1.75 in. AprilAire 1830 / 1850 / 1852 commonly use EZ Kleen 5443 (confirm; 1850F uses a different filter).
  3. Confirm the dehumidifier model on the rating plate. Brand-only searches (“Santa Fe filter”) span many housings that do not share a cartridge.
  4. Watch nominal vs actual depth. A listing labeled 14×17.5×2 may be a true 1.75-inch pack. Ordering a hard 2-inch trade filter into a 1.75-inch slot is a common failure.
  5. Decide OEM vs alternate after fit is clear. Maker or authorized OEM is the safest seal and warranty baseline. Alternates can work when they match the measured size and MERV your manual allows — buy one first, not a case.
  6. Plan the change interval. Many whole-home manuals call for checking every 3–6 months (sooner in dusty crawlspaces). Dirty filters cut pint capacity and efficiency.
  7. Mind pre-filters. Some Compact-style kits pair a washable pre-filter with disposable MERV packs. Reorder the right stack, not only the pleated media.
