Furnace filter sizes: measure once, reorder without guessing

Homeowners keep buying the wrong HVAC air filter because the number on the box (nominal size) is not what a tape measure shows (actual size), and MERV ratings get mixed up with fit. How to choose (size first, then MERV)

  1. Read the old filter frame. Look for something like 20x25x1 printed large. That triad is Length × Width × Thickness in inches — the nominal size you order.
  2. Measure the slot if the label is gone. Length, width, and depth of the opening to about 1/8". Round to the nearest whole inch for standard sizes. If you land on a true odd fraction (for example 17.5" or 22.25"), do not force a standard size — look at custom-cut options.
  3. Expect actual size to be smaller. A filter labeled 20×25×1 often measures about 19.5×24.5×0.75. That clearance is intentional so it slides in. Actual dimensions also vary slightly by brand, so a switch of manufacturer can feel tighter or looser even at the same nominal size.
  4. Confirm thickness matches the rack. A 1" slot will not take a 4" media cabinet filter. Thicker filters (2", 4", 5") usually last longer between changes when the cabinet is built for them.
  5. Pick MERV after fit. MERV is filtration efficiency, not size. Common residential picks: MERV 8 for basic dust / equipment protection; MERV 11 for pets and everyday allergens; MERV 13 for finer particles — only if the blower and slot can handle the extra resistance. When unsure, start at MERV 8–11 and ask an HVAC tech before jumping to 13 on an older system.
  6. Set a change cadence. Rough guide only: many 1" filters are checked every 30–90 days; thicker media cabinets often 6–12 months. Pets, wildfire smoke, and heavy dust shorten that.

Comparison criteria (what actually matters when shopping)
