Humidifier wick filters: which letter code and part number to buy

Evaporative cool-moisture humidifiers need a wick that sits at the right depth in the reservoir and matches the housing’s airflow path. Shoppers often buy a generic “Honeywell filter” multipack, then find Filter A will not seat in a Filter C or Filter T unit — or that an aftermarket wick is too short to stay wet. Wicks also harden fast on hard water and usually need replacing every 30–60 days. This page helps you lock the right SKU and buy the correct Amazon-available wick.

Read the humidifier’s rating-label model number and the filter letter / part number on the old wick (or in the manual) before you trust a “compatible with” Amazon title. Letter codes are shapes, not grades.

Who needs this

How to choose (model + letter + part number first)

  1. Confirm it is an evaporative unit. Cool-moisture wick humidifiers need a wick. Many ultrasonic / warm-mist models are filter-free (optional demineralization cartridges are not the same product).
  2. Copy the humidifier model from the rating plate. Brand-only searches (“Honeywell humidifier filter”) span Filter A, C, E, and T housings that do not share a SKU.
  3. Match the filter letter and part number. Honeywell examples: Filter A = HAC-504 / HAC-504AW; Filter C = HC-888 / HC-888N; Filter E = HC-14 / HC-14N; Filter T = HFT600. Vornado evaporative models commonly use MD1-0002 (also sold as MD1-0001 substitute) at about 7.25 × 9.5 × 1.5 in.
  4. Do not treat letter codes as upgrades. Filter E is a large console wick, not a “better” Filter A. Filter T is a tall tower wick for HEV-615 / HEV-620. Wrong shape means bypass, low output, or a housing that will not close.
  5. Decide OEM vs alternate after the code is clear. Maker / authorized OEM is the safest fit and output baseline. Alternates can work when they name your exact part and dimensions — buy one first, not a case.
  6. Plan the change interval. Typical guidance is every 30–60 days (sooner on hard water or continuous high output). Replace sooner if the wick is hard, crusty, torn, odorous, or output drops with the fan still running.
  7. Install without wringing or cutting. Soak or rinse in cool water if the manual says to; never vinegar/bleach on the wick, never squeeze the media, never trim a different letter to “make it fit.”

Comparison criteria (what matters when shopping)

Criterion What to verify
Humidifier model Listing must name your exact model or documented series (e.g. HCM-350, HEV-320, Evap3).
Filter letter / part number Prefer listings that name HAC-504, HC-888, HC-14, HFT600, MD1-0002, Holmes HWF##, etc.
Actual dimensions Especially for Vornado / Holmes / BestAir crosses — height, width, and thickness must match.
Reservoir reach Wick must sit deep enough to stay saturated; short aftermarket wicks are a common failure.
Airflow / housing close No force-fit into the grille; compressed pleats cut output.
OEM vs alternate Alternates need the exact code; avoid photo-only “fits Honeywell” claims.
Return policy on fit Prefer sellers with an easy return if the wick is short, thick, or wrong letter.

Common wick families (examples only)

These show up often in U.S. evaporative humidifiers. Yours may differ — use your model and part number, not this list alone.

Filter family (examples) Notes
Honeywell Filter A — HAC-504 / HAC-504AW Broad tabletop / quiet-comfort family: HCM-300 / HCM-350 / HEV-312 / HEV-355 and many HCM-500/600/710/1000/2000 series. AW variants add a blue air-washing pre-filter layer.
Honeywell Filter C — HC-888 / HC-888N HEV-320 and HCM-890 series. Dimensionally different from Filter A — do not substitute.
Honeywell Filter E — HC-14 / HC-14N Large console wick for HEV-680 / HEV-685 and HCM-6009 / HCM-6011-class units.
Honeywell Filter T — HFT600 Tall tower wick for HEV-615 / HEV-620 top-fill humidifiers only.
Vornado MD1-0002 (MD1-0001 substitute) About 7.25 × 9.5 × 1.5 in; Evap1 / Evap3 / Model 30 / Model 50 / EV3-class evaporative units. Generics that are too thick or short underperform.
Holmes / Bionaire / Duracraft / BestAir crosses Often sold as HWF60 / HWF80 / HWF100, BWF100, AC-815-class wicks via BestAir letter codes (e.g. H55-C, H64-C, H100-6). Match the appliance model parts list, not brand alone.
Ultrasonic / warm-mist units Usually no wick. Do not buy Filter A-style packs for filter-free models; optional demineralization or tank cartridges are a different SKU.
