How to choose (model family, charcoal vs foam, rinse, cadence)

1. Read the fountain model name on the base or manual. Search that name plus “replacement filter,” not a generic “cat fountain filter.” Shape and housing differ by brand.
2. For Drinkwell, pick the PAC family first. PAC00-13070 is the premium multi-compartment pack for Original / Platinum / Mini / Zen / Multi-Tier / Outdoor Dog / Everflow. PAC00-13906 (4-pack) and PAC00-16151 (12-pack) cover Avalon / Pagoda / Sedona / Seascape / Butterfly / many ½–2 gallon Drinkwell fountains. A “compatible with both” third-party claim still needs a size check against your old filter.
3. Buy foam separately when your model uses it. Drinkwell ceramic / stainless / Avalon-class units often use PAC00-13711 foam to catch hair before it hits the pump. Charcoal alone does not replace foam.
4. Rinse new charcoal filters before install. Soak and rinse until the water runs clear so loose carbon dust does not cloud the bowl. Follow the pack — soap is usually a bad idea on foam.
5. Replace charcoal about every 2–4 weeks (sooner with multiple pets or heavy saliva / hair). Replace foam roughly every 1–2 months, or when it stays slimy after a clean.
6. Clean the fountain when you change filters. A new filter in a slimy bowl fails fast. Vinegar or a fountain cleaning kit helps; rinse thoroughly.
