Pitcher water filter cartridges: which family to buy (not “fits Brita”)

Countertop pitchers and dispensers burn through cartridges on a schedule — roughly every 40 gallons / 2 months for most Standard-class filters, longer for Elite / Longlast packs. Shoppers often grab a multipack that “looks right,” then find a Stream-only gray filter will not seat in a classic Brita reservoir, a ZeroWater 5-stage pack will not fit a Brita lid, or the electronic indicator keeps blinking because it was never reset for Elite mode. This page helps you lock the right filter family and buy Amazon-available cartridges that seat correctly.

Confirm the pitcher brand and filter family before you trust a listing title. Brita Standard (white) and Elite (blue, formerly Longlast) share most Brita pitchers and dispensers; Brita Stream (gray) is a separate Filter-As-You-Pour system. PUR and ZeroWater use their own cartridges.

Who needs this

How to choose (brand + filter family first)

  1. Identify the pitcher system, not just the brand sticker. Classic Brita pour-through pitchers and dispensers are not the same as Brita Stream Filter-As-You-Pour units. PUR and ZeroWater reservoirs take their own cartridges.
  2. Match the Brita filter color / family. Original / Standard filters are white (~40 gallons / ~2 months). Elite filters are blue (~120 gallons / ~6 months) and were previously sold as Longlast / Longlast+. Stream filters are gray and only for Stream pitchers.
  3. Do not force Stream packs into classic reservoirs (or the reverse). Wrong family means no seal, bypass, or a lid that will not close.
  4. Reset the indicator for the filter you installed. Switching from Standard to Elite usually needs a longer STATUS / MODE hold so the light tracks 120 gallons instead of 40. Older indicators may still say Longlast+.
  5. Decide OEM vs alternate after the family is clear. Maker OEM is the safest seal and certification baseline. Store-brand “compatible with Brita” packs can work when they name Standard vs Elite / Longlast explicitly — buy one first, not a case.
  6. Rinse / prime per the manual. Soak or flush new carbon packs as directed; discard the first few pitchers of water (or use them for plants) before drinking.
  7. Plan the change interval. Standard / Stream-class: about every 40 gallons (~2 months). Elite / Longlast: about every 120 gallons (~6 months). Change sooner for hard water, heavy daily use, or off taste / odor.

Comparison criteria (what matters when shopping)

Criterion What to verify
Pitcher / dispenser system Classic Brita pour-through vs Stream; PUR; ZeroWater; store-brand clone of which family.
Filter family Brita Standard (white), Elite / Longlast (blue), Stream (gray); PUR pitcher cartridge; ZeroWater 5-stage.
Physical seal Groove / notch alignment; firm seat in the reservoir; no force-fit into a Stream spout or ZeroWater lid.
Life rating ~40 gal (Standard / Stream) vs ~120 gal (Elite). Reset the electronic indicator to match.
Contaminant claims Prefer packs with NSF / performance sheets for the claims you care about (chlorine taste/odor, lead, etc.).
OEM vs alternate Alternates must name the exact family; avoid photo-only “fits Brita pitcher” claims.
Return policy on fit Prefer sellers with an easy return if the cartridge leaks, rattles, or will not seal.

Common filter families (examples only)

These show up often in U.S. pitcher shopping. Yours may differ — use your pitcher model and the old cartridge marking, not this list alone.

Filter family (examples) Notes
Brita Original / Standard (white) Fits classic Brita pitchers and dispensers. Typical life ~40 gallons / ~2 months. Default pack in many starter kits.
Brita Elite (blue; formerly Longlast / Longlast+) Same mounting as Standard on classic Brita pitchers/dispensers; longer life (~120 gallons / ~6 months). Reset indicator to Elite / Longlast mode.
Brita Stream (gray) Only for Filter-As-You-Pour Stream pitchers. Not interchangeable with Standard or Elite.
Brita faucet / bottle / Hub packs Different products from pitcher cartridges. Do not buy faucet or bottle filters for a pitcher reservoir.
PUR pitcher cartridges Own family for PUR pitchers/dispensers. Not a Brita drop-in even when dimensions look similar.
ZeroWater 5-stage cartridges Own family; TDS meter readings are part of the product story. Not compatible with Brita lids.
Store-brand “compatible with Brita” Often Standard- or Longlast-class clones (e.g. Kirkland / Great Value). Confirm which Brita family they claim before ordering a multipack.
